The energy market consists of wholesale electricity and gas, transmission and distribution networks, and energy retail markets. The renewables sector of the NSW energy industry is experiencing strong growth, with 2019 a record year in energy output from renewable sources. 93% of energy investment since 2013 has been in wind and solar plants, mostly located on the fringes of the grid. Investments have also sprung up in ‘firming’ capacities such as hydro plants, which fill supply gaps when other sources prove unreliable. Investments in energy distribution increased by 9% in 2019, marking the third consecutive year in rising network investment. Productivity in electricity distribution networks increased by 1% and in transmission by 2.2% in 2018 - ahead of Australian economic growth as a whole
